George J. Boer is a Senior Scientist with, and former Chief of, Canadian Center for Climate Modelling and Analysis and an Adjunct Professor, School of Earth and Ocean Sciences, University of Victoria. He led the group that developed the Canadian General Circulation Model and is an expert in the areas of climate variability, climate change, and seasonal to decadal prediction and predictability. He has contributed to the science through a wide range of book and journal publications, through participation in the WMO/WCRP Working Groups such as WGNE and WGCM, and as a Lead-Author and Contributor to the Assessment Reports of the IPCC. His interest, activity and abilities in seasonal prediction are indicated by his serving on the CLIVAR Working Group on Seasonal to Interannual Prediction (WGSIP), as the Chair of the Seasonal Forecast Model Intercomparison Project (SMIP) Panel, on the Scientific Steering Committee of the Asian-Pacific Climate Network/Asian- Pacific Climate Centre (APCN/APCC) guiding the development of a multi-model seasonal prediction capability for the region, as a member of the WMO/JSC Task Force on Seasonal Prediction which is part of the COPES research strategy and, finally, as a member of the WMO CBS Team on Verification of Long-range Forecasts. Dr. Boer was directly involved in the Historical Forecasting Project of the CLIVAR Network and was a theme leader investigating potential predictability and 1-tier coupled seasonal forecasting.
